Theme Song
Make Me a Channel of Your Peace
Make me a channel of your peace
Where there is hatred let me bring your love
Where there is injury, your pardon Lord
And where there is doubt true faith in You
Make me a channel of your peace
Where there is despair in life let me bring hope
Where there is darkness only light
And where there's sadness ever joy
Oh, Master grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love with all my soul
Make me a channel of your peace
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
In giving of ourselves that we receive
And in dying that we are born to eternal life
Oh, Master grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love with all my soul
Make me a channel of your peace
Where there is hatred let me bring your love
Where there is injury, your pardon Lord
And where there is doubt true faith in You
Prayer
Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
MESSAGE
James 3: 13-18 (New International Version)
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
The Scripture reading addresses how God’s wisdom can guide us to “Be the Peace”.
James first provides a description of wisdom that does not come from God as a heart that is selfish and determined to have its own way. He says that this wisdom is “earthly, unspiritual, demonic”. This kind of wisdom produces nothing but turmoil and evil.
On the other hand, the wisdom from above (verse 17) is a reference to the wisdom that God gives. It is given to all who ask. This wisdom is first of all pure. It is free from selfishness and the determination to have one’s way.
This wisdom is peaceable. The wisdom that God gives produces peace among people – not strife. This means that God’s wisdom does not start quarrels, strife, dissension.
We often get caught up in demanding our rights, but to be considerate and submissive means that we can be willing to yield and give way to others. It is us being characterised by meekness rather than by arrogance and self-assertion.
Being full of mercy and good fruit means that we are overflowing with feelings of kindness and compassion; that we are considerate; that we are forbearing; that we try to meet the needs of others; that we forgive one another; that we encourage one another. The wisdom that God gives is characterised by love for others.
With attention placed on others and not on ourselves, we can be impartial and fair in meeting the needs of others.
The wisdom that God gives allows us to be sincere. It is without hypocrisy. There is no need to pretend to be what we are not.
By first setting out vested in purity, bestowed on us through God’s wisdom, being peaceable, considerate and submissive; full of mercy and good fruit; impartial and sincere, we can sow the seeds of peace and “Be the Peace”.
